P.S - I have only tried to take out my frustration of not being de-stressed, in the most cynical / comic way possible. If you don't like it, don't read it :P !
My expectations - I always rated Kamal for show-casing a combination of comedy, class and romance, that others often don't. None of these were seen this time. I saw desperation, restlessness to show "I can do so many things", as if he were going to die tomorrow, and this was his last movie.
Thinking for Kamal - The only justification to Mr. Kamal acting in 10 roles would be to substantiate his "Anbe Sivam" concept, "there's a hero in every human being". For all the bragging KS Ravikumar did on a TV show with Madan, this movie was absolute bsht!
Drawbacks -
- Toooooooo looooong - 10 roles, each can sustain for 10 mins, i.e., 100 min movie and the stronger ones to story deserve 30 additional mins. Which only brings it to a 130 mins movie, seems less ? - add 2-3 songs for mass, (absolutely unnecessary though) , aka 2.5 hrs only. This movie runs for three full hours. Justified if I were glued to my seat, but i felt a thousand pins at butt after an hour. May be am just a lil too impatient as always.
- Sin to Asin - BEAUTIFUL LADY, one can look at, for at least a few minutes, if not hours. They let her run errands. Not even one good close up / cover shot ! what a waste of time!
- Dance - They let Jayaprada do the dance .. "Hello Madam, this is not thakida thadimi thandaana" ??!!??! "Samjhe kya ?"
- Kamal & Punjabi - Haaye mai mar jaawaan! Tamil speaking tight tongues can never let words play loose on them. "Punjabi was stressed in between Kamal's lips" - no pun intended, but that's the only comment i could pass !
- X factor missing - Typical Kamal pun was missing !
- Kabilan - Great lyricist, good poet. But what was he doing in this movie? Couldn't they accommodate his talent in writing a few scenes / words for Asin?
- How does love happen - Okay okay.. now I know everyone knows how it all happen(s/d), but why couldn't they add subtle shots / gestures during this whole chase!
- Graphics / video game ?
- Background score & Music - Himesh? wtfh! wouldn't Devisri/ARR/Harris/Yuvan do great?
- Make up flaw - Fletcher's make up was melting in many scenes, esp around the eyes, watch the scene on road with
- Too narrative - Many scenes could have been cut off, during the second half
- Poor Comedy - But for Balram Naidu's role, the crew wouldn't have a place to hide their face
- Atheist Kamal Vs Theism, on screen - I don't want to see him introspecting on screen, he could chose his drawing /study for that!
- Cinematography - First 15 mins is PC Sriram, then, it is PC Sans Sriram !
- Technical flaws - Vehicle chase.. ?? look at the cars, illogical and virtual image concept is basic physics for a camera man ain't it, the shots in many places, esp the lorry accident has virtual images in consecutive frames ?? :P
- My sincere piece of advice - If you have 4 hours of your life, to waste, and can wait at a cinema hall waiting for a climax epilogue to end, for about 1 hour, trying hard to catch a good glimpse of Asin, go ahead !
- Thathuvam - Spent Noota-Aravai, kai iruvai, verum aruvai!
Noota aravai means the number 160 in telugu.

this is the 110th online review of ds'tharam im reading now. i went there without any high expectations and enjoyed it. agree to the flaws in the movie, but i enjoyed this though it was a bit looong. well, however bad it is, i never miss kamal, maniratnam movies.
if u decide to go against my movie recomm next time, wait for TR's next master piece which i will highly recomm for u.. ;-D
Firstly, thank you for reading 109 reviews, and still coming forth to read this 110th review. I now know the reason, why you stay 18 hours at work, :P) Pls DOn't let our boss know this. Hmm.. "wihtout any high expectations", thats the key. There is mass and there is a community seeking class and distinguishment. I don't watch movies unless they have a class in it, cos I demand more than the ordinary. I think I have clearly specified that throughout my write-up.
I appreciate your generosity of having no expectations or high standards for one of the best actors, our country has. An appraisal without goals, and a high rating for not meeting expectations, Excuse me?!!? Please let me know if you ever have your own company :)
So, now to TR's master piece, you're right. I have definitely watched TR, and many other actors' movies, only, to have fun as a gang. The sole motto being, "to ridicule", all that is on the screen. what do you think, then, is the reason for all these reality shows on "laughter", survive?
I have watched Nayagan, exactly 68 times till date. Not just watched, but absolutely relished.
Mani, Shankar, ARR (for music), Kamal, Rajini, Vikram-also, now, in line, have created a space for themselves. Disregarding it, is disrespect of their exceptional talent. If you read through my article carefully, my review is still wondering "Why did they do it to themselves?"
Njoi movies, and I gift you my envy, for you seem to have time for all that :) Its so difficult to live with that idiot box, and at movie halls.
I wont agree to the fact that dasa had created hype. I was thrown to the shore by the sivaji tide already. Dasa hype is not up to the level of the hype that sivaji created. Being a rajini fan, i had huge expectation from sivaji as rajini and shankar are joining hands with ARR. Rajini, ARR didnt disappoint but certainly shankar did. you can read that in my blog post. After this i have decided that i dont fall pray to their hype. So exactly is what i did. Dasa music launch bringing jackie chan, amitabh to generate hype among audience certainly didnt create a hype in me. I didnt watch that show at all. If rajini was there, i would have :) But i would say that also didnt bring hype to me. I saw dasa without the voices telling an actor in 10 roles in the history of world cinema (infact i went to the hall after this slide - i heard it from my friends that they have put this one). so i saw it as total commericial and enjoyed it :) But i agree to all your points :) and i would say this is not for intelligent kamal fans and yours is too much critiscm for a movie :)

totally agree with Sami - Dasa is a typical commercial movie(produced by Aascar to reap nice profit with kamal). and obviously kamal needs to do such films once in a while to get money flowing into his dream-project. this is a really interesting update on Dasa..chk this out if u can read tamil - http://ennam.blogspot.com/2008/07/blog-post_12.html
